sue.jpg We have had a busy start to 2015 hence this brief newsletter reaches you late in the month! Our focus has been on the completion of the refurbishment of St Katharine Docks Medical Practice, with Dr Patel and the team having moved back into the Surgery just before Christmas - more news on this on-going project to support our local GP will follow in our next Newsletter.

Our next Social evening is on Monday 2nd February in the Copperfield Bar of the Dickens Inn from 6.30pm. We had a very good turnout for this event in January with over 45 members getting together. This is a great opportunity to bring potential new members along as a guest. We will be there again on Tuesday 3rd March and look forward to seeing you!

Your Committee is currently working on a number of events for our social programme, details of which will be available in future Newsletters.

Unique spectacle on the Thames this Friday

Residents located alongside the River Thames are in a prime position to witness a unique event this Friday. Fifty years ago, a worldwide television audience estimated at 350 million watched as Havengore carried the coffin of Sir Winston Churchill on his last journey by water, along the River Thames.

At lunchtime on Friday 30 January, as part of the Churchill 2015 commemorations, Havengore will retrace that journey. The highlights will include:

  • At 11:50am a wreath (specially made at the Royal British Legion Poppy Factory in Richmond) will be carried from the Church of St Peter, within the Tower of London, to Havengore
  • At 12:40 ‘Rule Britannia’ will be played by The Royal Hospital School Band as Havengore casts off from HMS President. Members of the Churchill family and others closely connected to the State Funeral will be on board.
  • At 12:45 Havengore will pass under Tower Bridge, which will be raised in honour of Sir Winston Churchill.
  • At 12:50 there will be a four gun salute from HMS Belfast as Havengore passes by.

Havengore will continue past Festival Pier (the end of the original funeral route) towards the Houses of Parliament. The event will culminate in a short service and wreath-laying in the waters of the river opposite the Palace of Westminster. The service begins at 13:15 and concludes at 13:35.

"Totally Thames"

barge.jpg This is now an established month of arts, culture and river events during September www.totallythames.org and as part of this programme St Katharine Docks will once again be hosting the Classic Boat Festival on 12th & 13th September with the addition this year of the Blue Ribbon Village.

Festive Dinner – date change!

Finally, we have decided to switch the date of our Festive Dinner this year to Monday 7th December to enable us to move into the Bridge Suite in The Guoman Tower Hotel. This will allow us to accommodate more members (it was a very tight fit this year in The Gallery restaurant and some members were too late to secure a place) and it will provide us with a stunning view of Tower Bridge and the Shard – do note the date in your diary now!
