sue.jpgAugust and September are gearing up to be busy months in St Katharine Docks with some exciting events taking place over the next few weeks, in particular the start of the 2015/16 Round the World Clipper Yacht Race on 30th August – see below about how you can get involved in supporting two of our intrepid members who have signed up for "The race of their lives!" by attending the Clipper Race Party on 29th August.

The Classic Boat Festival which is always a fun event will take place over the weekend of 12th/13th September in the centre basin of the Docks and FOSKD is teaming up with Totally Thames during this event for an interesting talk by the Marine Police which is free for members to attend on the afternoon of Sunday 13th September in the Dickens Inn, further information is included below.

We are delighted to welcome the Five Star, Grange City Hotel as a new retail partner to our concession scheme. They are offering members some great discounts which you can view by clicking the link in the article below. They have also organised a special social event for members at the hotel on Tuesday 1st September which I hope many of you will attend. Do take a look at how to book your place for this free event which includes a drinks and canapés reception.

On Tuesday 29th September we will hold the FOSKD AGM at the Dickens Inn, the timing will be 6.30pm for 7.00pm. This will also be a social evening for members only with drinks and food kindly provided by the Dickens Inn management – do please note the date in your diary now, a formal notice of the meeting will be emailed to all members in the first week of September.

One further date for your diary is the fabulous FOSKD Christmas Dinner which will be held on Monday 7th December, this year in the Bridge Suite of the Guoman Tower Hotel with its fantastic views of Tower Bridge and The Shard, more details will be circulated in the next Newsletter – it's definitely an event not to be missed!

We are delighted that FOSKD members Marta Michalska and Thom Fisher are both taking part in the Clipper Race and by happy co-incidence they have both been allocated to crew the "UNICEF" yacht! This will make following the race from its departure on 30th August 2015 until their return to St Kats in July 2016 very exciting! On 22nd August the race village will open on Marble Quay and all the yachts will have arrived – many of them including the UNICEF yacht will be open for the public to go on board to view the living conditions the crew will enjoy(!) as they battle the elements around the world. Marta has organised a send-off party for crew and friends of the UNICEF yacht and you are welcome to email her direct on marta.michalska@amcgroup.com to buy a ticket for the event which cost £30 each and includes drinks and food. We hope you will go along to support our two intrepid mariners and wish them bon voyage! The yachts will depart the Docks at approximately 2.00pm on Sunday 30th August. UNICEF is working together with Clipper as the official race Charity to make the world a safer place for children.

Dickens Suite upstairs in The Dickens Inn, Marble Quay

This event is part of the Totally Thames month long celebration of the River Thames and is free to attend. There will be a cash bar available.

The Marine Policing Unit (MPU) is responsible for policing the 47 miles of River Thames within the MPS area (Dartford to Hampton Court) as well as providing a specialist response to over 250 miles of canals and waterways, lakes and reservoirs and other bodies of water in London. This is a far cry from its roots back in 1798 when the Thames River Police was first formed to combat theft of cargo when the Thames and the London Docks were at the centre of world trade. The MPU is based at Wapping Police Station, with 60 officers trained to a minimum level of Royal Yacht Association Advanced Powerboat and Yacht Master Theory. The officers have also passed Port of London local knowledge examination which allows them to work on the River Thames. Come and hear about some of the fascinating and varied work they get involved in.

News

The FOSKD Committee has been kept very busy over the last couple of months responding to various Licensing and Planning applications which a number of the retailers and tenants around the Docks have submitted. At the time of writing most of these are still awaiting hearings/decisions. More information about these matters will be discussed at our AGM on 29th September.

Our regular meetings with the Blackstone management continue, with a notable addition to the team; Stephen Wallace-Jones has been appointed by Blackstone as the new Estate General Manager with effect as from 1st July 2015. Stephen’s appointment was confirmed as the contract with the former managing agents for the estate, Bilfinger GVA, was terminated on 30th June. We look forward to working with Stephen and the new team that he is assembling who will be based in the estate management office in International House.
